Slavko Dokmanovic Dies Under Unclear Circumstances
December 24, 1999

June 29, 1998- Slavko Dokmanovic, ex-mayor of Vukovar, on charges for war crimes that he allegedly executed civilians during the civil war in Croatia, died on 29th June under unclear circumstances. According to world agencies reports, Dokmanovic hanged himself in his jail-cell in the Hague.

There are 27 persons in the prison of War Crimes Tribunal in the Hague, expecting trials. Most of the accused, under public and secret indictments, so far unknown to international law, are the Serbs. For this reason, unbiasness of the Hague Tribunal has been often put under question mark, so that circumstances under which Dokmanovic lost his life (he reportedly hanged himself in the maximum security cell) will surely additionally burden the court activities.
