Dragan Tomic, the president of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia was born in Gornja Bukovica, Republic of Serbia, on December 9, 1935.
He received his Bachelor`s Degree at the Faculty of Chemical Engineering and Metallurgy of the University of Belgrade. He started his working career in the factory of rubber products "Rekord" in Belgrade as a young engineer and was promoted to the main engineer and production manager respectively until he became the general director. He has worked in the Oil Industry of Serbia as the general director of NIS "Jugopetrol", Belgrade, since 1989. He is also the chairman of the Management Board of "Politika" company and the League of Engineers and Technicians of Yugoslavia.
He was elected the president of the National Assembly on December 3, 1997. On this function he was elected, last time, on February 1, 1994. Since, July 23, until December 29, 1997. in accordance of the Constitution of Serbia (Article 87), Dragan Tomic was the acting president of the Republic of Serbia.
